Imitation of the West has taken away the East from itself; Instead of blind imitation, the oriental people should make a critical appraisal of the West. 

The power of the west does not lie in its orchestras; Nor does it lie in its dances; nor in its women going about without veils. It is not due to the magical beauty of their faces, radiant like tulips; Nor from the radiant faces of beloved, nor from bare legs or their hairstyles. Its greatness and strength do not lie in Irreligion; Nor is its rise due to the Latin script. 

The glory of the West springs from its knowledge, And its mastery of science and technology. Its wisdom does not lie in the cuts of its clothes; Nor is the oriental turban any kind of bar to the acquirement of science and technical skills, 

O thou smart Youngman, to gain mastery of science and technological skills. What is needed is a brain, not the European style of dress. On this path, the utmost essential is a proper vision; And this kind of headgear, or that, makes no difference. 

If thou be blessed with an active and alert mind, that is all thou need; If you have a temperament that can perceive things and get straight to the point, that is quite enough. Night after night, if one sits, breathing in the smoke of his lamp, He gets on the track of knowledge and technical skill. 

No one has ever been able to fix the boundaries of the Realm of meaning, But you cannot take hold of it except by perseverance and diligent work. In this old world, to seek a soft and easy way. Is a sign that life already has left the body!

مشرق نے مغرب کی پیروی کر کے خود کو بھلا دیا ہے۔ حالانکہ مشرقی قوموں کو مغرب پر تنقید کرنی چاہیے تھی۔

یورپ والوں کی قوت بینڈ باجے اور گانے بھجانے سے نہیں ہے اور نہ اس قوت کا باعث وہاں کی بےپرده لڑکیوں کا رقص ہے۔ نہ یہ سرخ چہرہ محبوبوں کے جادو کی وجہ سےہے اور نہ ان حسینوں کی ننگی پنڈلیوں اور کٹی ہوئی زلفیں ہیں۔ اس کی قوت لادینیت کی وجہ سے نہیں ہے اور نہ اس کی ترقی لاطینی رسم‌الخط کے باعث ہے۔

یورپ والوں کی قوت کا باعث ان کا علم و فن ہے اور ان کا چراغ اسی آگ سے روشن ہے۔ ان کی حکمت، لباس کی شکل و صورت اور انداز کے سبب نہیں ہے اور پگڑی علم و ہنر کی راه میں رکاوٹ نہیں ہے۔

اے نازوادا والے جوان علم و ہنر کے لئے مغز چاہیے نہ کے انگریزوں کا لباس۔ اس راه (حصول علم و ہنر) میں صرف نگاہ کی ضرورت ہے۔ اس کے لئے اِس ٹوپی یا اُس ٹوپی کی ضرورت نہیں ہے۔

اگر تیری فکر با سلیقہ و باہنر ہے تو کافی ہے اور اگر تیری طبیعت تیز عقل والی ہے تو (حصول علم و ہنر کے لئے) کافی ہے۔ جب کوئی (شخص) کئی راتیں چراغ کا دهواں کھاتا ہے تو وہ علم و ہنر اور حکمت کا سراگ پا لیتا ہے۔

علم و حکمت کی سلطنت کی کوئی بھی حدبندی نہیں کر سکا۔یہ مسلسل جدوجہد کے بغیر ہاتھ نہیں آتی۔ اس پرانی دنیا میں آسانی تلاش کرنا اس بات کی دلیل ہے کہ جان بدن سی نکل چکی ہے۔
